19 Jun CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY AND MATERIALS IN THE MANUFACTURING OF ISB SPORT BEARINGS
When premium raw materials and precise production control are key to bearing performance
Bearings and bottom brackets on bicycles are the components that enable each pedal rotation, and their remarkable evolution has led to the development of sophisticated models that significantly enhance pedaling performance. The design and assembly of the two bearing rings, together with the balls (steel in the Endurance Series or ceramic in the PRO Series) held by the polyamide cage, allow rotational movement between two parts joined through rolling.
Bearings installed in the bottom bracket shell are subjected to axial and radial loads generated by pedaling. It is important to clarify that these loads may cause deformation of the rolling elements and raceways, but not breakage (failure load). Following such deformation, permanent damage may occur, which worsens with increased rotational speed and exposure to contaminants (moisture, dust, etc.), accelerating wear. Hence, the importance of a professional, specialized manufacturing process and the use of high-quality raw materials steels, nitrile seals, and even lubricants which ultimately extend the bearing’s service life.
For manufacturing the bearing rings and balls in the Endurance Series, special steels are used that studies have shown to increase service life by at least 1.5 times compared to standard steels under the same load and speed conditions. After hardening, decontamination, and cold forging, the impurity content is reduced, improving performance.
ISB SPORT ceramic bearings utilize G5-grade ceramic balls which, being lighter, generate less centrifugal force, resulting in lower friction and allowing the bearings to spin faster as they require less energy to maintain speed.
AS A 360º MANUFACTURER, ISB SPORT APPLIES AN EXCLUSIVE HEAT TREATMENT PROCESS THAT REDUCES RING DEFORMATION AND ENSURES HARDNESS, PROVIDING A SOLID GUARANTEE OF THE BEARING’S LIFESPAN.
Smooth and effortless rotation is essential for bottom bracket bearings. For this reason, ISB SPORT performs extensive testing and comparisons focusing on the design and structure, especially at cage separation points and sealing contact areas, to maintain the bearing’s starting torque within precise tolerances. The Italian brand incorporates sealing through a flat inner ring combined with a light-contact rubber seal on one side and a no-contact seal on the other.
Waterproof and dustproof properties are critical for bicycle bottom bracket bearings. Therefore, the bearings undergo various laboratory tests to ensure they can withstand harsh environments, regardless of whether the bike is road, mountain, or track.
INNOVATION AND DEVELOPMENT IN ISB SPORT BO BEARINGS
With a focus on performance, durability, and versatility, ISB SPORT has introduced the new BO bearings this year. This innovation, featuring a dual finish and a double polishing process, is clearly visible thanks to the black color of the rings. It allows the cycling sector whether gravel, road, or MTB to benefit from bearings with enhanced intrinsic qualities:
- Maximum corrosion resistance
- Reduced friction
- Increased rotational capacity
- Higher speeds
- Greater durability and lifespan
ISB SPORT BO bearings can be found both in the Endurance BO Series (the brand’s broadest range, covering steel bearings for various applications) and the PRO BO Series (ceramic bearings). The latter are manufactured with the clear goal of minimizing friction, incorporating premium quality ceramic balls and special grease key factors for their performance.
