23 Lug PATXI PEULA, SILVER IN THE 2021 EURO CANELAS EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP
33. This is the number of medals that Patxi Peula has won in the editions of the absolute European skating championship since 2007. However we have to add the 5 obtained in the junior category, and the 7 of the world championships. In total, the skater from Vitoria has got 45 international medals, 7 European Championships and 2 World Championships.
The last medal came this week at the European Championship in Canelas (Portugal) after the second place, which means silver, in the 3,000m American team relay event. A race that he ran together with his partner in Marianistas Rafa Heredia and Nil Llop.
Peula started the European Championships without having competed internationally for many months. Entry into the championships for him was “bittersweet”, with a ninth place finish in the 10,000m elimination score. The second day the he felt better, and he got a fifth place in the 10,000m elimination. A position that made him “happy”: “it is not one of my favourites, but I felt good in this race”, he assured.
La carrera
Como suele ser habitual, la carrera de 3.000 metros relevos a la americana por equipos resultó muy movida: “Pasamos por todas las posiciones. Salimos cuartos y llegamos a estar primeros, pero hubo cambios durante toda la carrera. Pero a falta de tres vueltas hubo un encontronazo entre Portugal, Francia. Poco después Italia pasó a ser primera y España segunda, y en el último relevo pude rematar para conseguir la plata“, narra Patxi Peula.
“Siempre se dice que esta prueba se gana en la zona de relevos, y nosotros los dimos todos limpios. Es una carrera de supervivencia, Francia e Italia eran favoritos, y la medalla estaba cara”, reconoce Peula. “Pero nosotros salimos a ganar, como hay que salir en estas pruebas, porque nunca sabes que puede pasar: una caída, un choque… Y la suerte estuvo de nuestro lado”.
